Low carb diets have been popular for some time among those who want to lose weight fast.

The keto diet is a particularly high fat version.

However, an expert has warned that the diet may not be safe longterm.

Although, many swear by this method to help them drop the pounds.

What is the keto diet

The keto diet, or ketogenic diet, is a low-carb diet plan.

Dieters may only eat low carb foods, such as lean meat and dairy. The idea of the diet is to put the body into a state of ketosis.

This is an alternative metabolic rate in which the body burns fat instead of carbohydrates to survive.

However, the diet was not originally used for weight loss. In fact, it was used as a cure for epilepsy.

Hebe Mills, who is an Associate Nutritionist, told Express.co.uk: “The Ketogenic diet has been used since the 1920s as a medical therapy diet for epilepsy patients that do not respond to anti-epilepsy drugs (AEDs) to aid seizure control.

“It has also been used to improve symptoms in metabolic syndrome patients. ⁣

⁣”The idea behind the diet is to prime the body into a state of ketosis by minimising the intake of carbohydrates (including starchy vegetables) and to use fat as the main source of energy.”

Ketosis is a state the body will go into when you don’t have enough carbs for energy.

Side effects of ketosis are said to include bad breath and short-term fatigue.

Hebe explained: “Ketosis is a normal process in the body, which happens when your body doesn't have enough carbs to burn for energy and instead burns fat and makes substances called ketones to use for fuel.⁣”

However, Hebe had a warning for those looking for a long-term solution to the question of a healthy lifestyle.

She said: “In recent years, the diet has had much attention in the media for it’s alleged weight loss benefits.

“The question is, does it work? Like many diets, an accompanying reduction in calorie intake may well lead to weight loss. That said, the diet is highly restrictive and shouldn’t be used long term. ⁣

⁣”If you’re looking to try the Keto diet, seek advice from a registered Dietician or Nutritionist before you start. Try to ensure that you are consuming a wide variety of the ‘allowed foods’ on the diet, otherwise you may be at risk of nutritional deficiency. ⁣

⁣”Remember that carbohydrates are vital for NORMAL bodily functioning and are the brains preferred fuel source, so eliminating them from your diet (unless medically advised to do so) is not healthy long term.”

She added: “If you’re looking to lose weight, elimination diets and fad diets usually don’t work. Your best bet is to work with a Nutritionist or Dietician to devise a healthy weight loss plan, which doesn’t remove entire food groups and includes an achievable diet and exercise plan.”
