The Boys ending explained: What happened at the end? | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The Boys on Amazon has become one of the platform’s most successful shows ever despite having only been released a few weeks ago. The first season of the hugely popular series ended on a dramatic cliffhanger that will have major implications going into season two. Here is everything you need to know about the ending of the series and what questions fans have left unanswered.

What happened at the end of The Boys on Amazon?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for The Boys season 1.

Mallory’s identity is revealed

The character of Mallory (played by Laila Robins) was mentioned throughout season one but viewers did not officially get to meet her until the finale.

Grace Mallory is the founder of The Boys and she reveals in a tragic moment why she left the team.

She admitted during a heated argument with Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) that her grandchildren were incinerated by Lamplighter.

In a conversation with Hughie (Jack Quaid), she tells him to get as far away from The Boys as possible.

She tells him: “Vengeance isn’t a path to glory Hugh, it’s a one-way ticket to a dead end.”

As viewers saw, this had a big impact on Hughie who splits from Billy and goes off on his own.

Fans of the show know that this could be an indicator that he will leave The Boys in season two.

Starlight saves A-Train’s life

After learning about the truth of how she got her powers, Starlight has been struggling to come to terms with her role in The Seven.

Hughie revealed that Vought injected Compound V into her as baby in order to give her superpowers.

But, the pair went their separate ways after Starlight found out the truth about Hughie’s involvement in The Boys.

In the season finale, Hughie appeals to her heroic side in order to convince her to help him rescue The Boys who have been taken prisoner by Vought.

She manages to help him save Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) but is almost stopped by her fellow superhero A-Train (Jessie T. Usher).

However, the superhero instead almost dies after overdosing of Compound V leads him to have a heart attack.

Instead of leaving him for dead, Starlight and Hughie make the decision to save him as she calls for back-up.

The season ends with Hughie escaping with The Boys while Starlight waits with A-Train.

Madelyn Stillwell is dead

Homelander (Antony Starr) has been slowly revealed throughout the season to be the big evil of the series.

This was solidified in the finale when the supremely powerful member of The Seven revealed that he injected terrorists with Compound V in order to provide an enemy for him to fight.

Alongside this, Billy has been searching for a way to kill Homelander, or at least hurt him, after he blames him for his wife Becca’s (Shantel VanSanten) death.

In order to do this he straps a bomb to Madelyn Stillwell (Elisabeth Shue), who is having an affair with Homelander.

However, the plan backfires when Homelander finds out that Stillwell has been lying to him and he kills her himself.

As a result, Butcher attempts to blow up Homelander and himself but the superhero saves them both.

Becca is still alive

Homelander was told that Becca was pregnant with his child but died when her body couldn’t handle the birth.

However, when Stillwell tells him that she is sorry about the miscarriage, he works out that he has been lied to about what actually happened.

At the end of the episode, Homelander takes Butcher, who was married to Becca, to her house and reveals she is still alive after all of this time.

What’s more, it’s revealed that Homelander’s son actually survived and has been living a quiet suburban life.

The season ends on this dramatic moment, which was different to storyline of the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.

All of this means that there a lot of untied ends to be resolved when The Boys returns for season two in 2020.

The Boys is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.
