Game of Thrones prequel: Lann the Clever to appear in new series? | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Game of Thrones may have come to an end on HBO following the eighth and final season earlier this year but a prequel series is on its way. Once again based on George RR Martin’s fantasy world, the untitled prequel series will introduce an entirely new era in Westeros set thousands of year prior to when GOT is set. As such, speculation surrounding which characters will appear is rife and some fans are excited at the prospect of House Lannister founder Lann the Clever starring.

Will Lann the Clever appear in Game of Thrones prequel?

The Game of Thrones prequel may be months and months away from its release date but there are still a number of rumours about which characters will appear.

HBO has remained tight-lipped about the new series, although several of the star-studded cast has been announced.

What George RR Martin-created characters the stars will play is currently unknown so Lann the Clever’s involvement is yet to be confirmed.

However, there are a number of clues to suggest Lann will appear in the new series.

One clue is the fact the spin-off prequel to Game of Thrones will take place in the Age of Heroes era.

HBO describes the series as: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.

“From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It’s not the story we think we know.”

Lann the Clever was a prominent figure during the Age of Heroes era in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series.

Many credit the character as the one who began House Lannister.

He’s even referenced in season eight of Game of Thrones by Bronn (Jeremy Flynn).

Brown comments to Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) that House Lannister was built by cutthroats, a profession Lann is widely believed to have undertaken.

While the clues point towards Lann being included in the prequel, Martin himself may have dropped a hint that the character wouldn’t appear.

Martin told Entertainment Weekly the Starks would star but ruled out the Lannister appearing.

He said: “The Starks will definitely be there. Obviously, the White Walkers are here — or as they’re called in my books, The Others — and that will be an aspect of it.

“There are things like dire wolves and mammoths – The Lannisters aren’t there yet, but Castlery Rock is certainly there - it’s like the Rock of Gibraltar.”

This ruling out of the Lannisters’ involvement may not bode well for Lann.

However, some GOT fans could argue that as Lann isn’t officially a Lannister despite being one of the house’s originators.

Therefore, Martin may not have actually ruled out an appearance for Lann.

Game of Thrones fans will have to wait for the prequel series to premiere to find out exactly who will appear.

Game Thrones season 8 is available to buy and stream on Amazon Prime now.
