Our guide to stand-up, improv and variety shows happening this weekend and in the week ahead.

‘BATTLICIOUS’ at the Creek and the Cave (Aug. 17, 11:55 p.m.). Comedians and rappers converge on the third Saturday of each month, now at this comedy spot in Long Island City, Queens, to exchange vocal jabs in freestyle one-on-one battles. The hosts are Victor Varnado and Chris Sullivan, a.k.a. Shockwave from the Broadway-bound group Freestyle Love Supreme.

SAM JAY at Union Hall (Aug. 21, 8 p.m.). This writer for “Saturday Night Live” grabs the spotlight for her own stand-up, which she showcased on Netflix’s “The Comedy Lineup” last year. Fans of the animated hit series “Rick and Morty” may recognize Jay as the host of its official Adult Swim after-show, “Ricking Morty.”

‘MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE’ at Q.E.D. (Aug. 18-20, 7 p.m.). Michelle Drozdick debuted this one-woman show during SOLOCOM 2018 at the People’s Improv Theater, and now she brings it to Astoria, Queens, for a three-night run. Her monologue depicts addiction as a love affair between a woman and a vodka bottle, from the heights of its honeymoon period down to its rock bottom. It’s a dark comedy, but a comedy nonetheless, so in a sense it does have a happy ending.

‘RISK!’ at Caveat (Aug. 22, 9:30 p.m.). Kevin Allison, who started his career on MTV in the 1990s, most notably with the sketch comedy series “The State,” created this showcase a decade ago, and it resulted in not only a successful podcast, but also a book, “RISK! True Stories People Never Thought They’d Dare to Share.” Among the storytellers this month are James Dean Jay Byrd, a writer and musician; Matthew Homenick, a college wrestling coach; Daralyse Lyons, a writer, life coach and yogi; and Sarah Hartshorne, a comedian and former contestant on “America’s Next Top Model.”

‘TINDER LIVE! WITH LANE MOORE’ at Littlefield (Aug. 17, 8 p.m.). Moore, who last year published the book “How to Be Alone,” hosts this monthly show in which she hooks up her phone to a large screen so audiences can guide her as she navigates the popular dating app Tinder, swiping on potential matches and chatting with prospective suitors, all in real time. Joining Moore onstage to offer comedic commentary are Joanna Hausmann, Shalewa Sharpe and Louis Peitzman.
