‘The Lighthouse’ Trailer: Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe Get Spooky

Robert Pattinson first found the spotlight as the vampire Edward Cullen in the “Twilight” movie franchise, and it was recently announced that he will take over the role of the Dark Knight in the director Matt Reeves’s forthcoming reboot of “The Batman.”

But before that, he’s tackling another dark part as a 19th-century man with a shadowy past who takes a job assisting a salty lighthouse keeper (Willem Dafoe) off the coast of New England in “The Lighthouse.”

The spooky, just-released teaser reveals the film was shot in stark black and white by the director Robert Eggers, whose 2015 feature debut, the period horror film “The Witch,” mesmerized critics and audiences, earning more than $40 million off a $4 million budget.

The only other cast member listed on IMDb.com aside from Pattinson and Dafoe is Valeriia Karaman, a first-time actress billed as “Mermaid.” She’s not in the trailer, which uses disturbing imagery to suggest just how mad Pattinson’s and Dafoe’s characters are driven by the isolation over the course of many dark and stormy, drunken nights.

After debuting at the Cannes Film Festival in May, the movie generated Oscar talk for Dafoe (who was previously nominated for “The Florida Project” and the Vincent Van Gogh biopic “At Eternity’s Gate,” among other films) as well as for Pattinson and Eggers.

“The Lighthouse” opens in theaters on Oct. 18.
