Pointless Celebrities Alexander Armstrong halted as Lee Hurst queries Helen Lederer answer | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Alexander, 49, and his Pointless co-host Richard Osman, 48, welcomed four pairs of comedians for today’s celebrity edition of the BBC quiz show.

It was Lee Hurst, 55, and Helen Lederer, 64, who caused a stir on the show when Alexander asked the contestants to give a pointless answer to the question: “Words ending in ‘…our.’

After Lee and his team mate Arthur Smith, 64, had given their answers, it was time for Helen and ally Cariad Lloyd, 36, to solve the question.

With a target to achieve of 17 points or less, Helen told Alexander: “May I suggest fervour?”

As the audience reacted to the comedian’s suggestion, Helen remarked: “Was there a buzz? Was there a buzz there?” as it seemed she may have jeopardised her chances in the competition.

Alexander then explained: “Here’s your red line. If you can get below this with fervour, you’re into the head-to-head.

The host was about to commence the drop on the score board, when Lee interrupted him and asked: “Are you sure she said…did she not say further, a completely wrong word?” doubting Helen’s answer.

Hitting back at her competitor, Helen replied: “Actually, I didn’t,” to which Lee went on to ask: “Are you sure?

“Can we play that back?” the comedian asked, clearly toying with his fellow constant, who exclaimed: “No!” to his request.

Moving on from the upheaval, Alexander continued with revealing what score Helen achieved, with the comedian securing a pointless answer.

Tonight, the sporting coverage wrapped so the scheduled programmes could air but last week’s unexpected change left viewers a little riled.

“Here we go! Stand by for BBC1’s schedule going out of the window (well the #Pointless repeat cancelled and the rest delayed) #Wimbledon,” one posted on Twitter.

Another added: “I’ve tuned in to watch a 2 year old repeat of Pointless Celebrities on prime time Saturday night and what do I have instead??? Live tennis. Ridiculous. #bbc1 #Pointless #PointlessCelebrities #wimbledon.”

A third opined: “And yet again #Wimbledon messes up another nights viewing just stick it on the red button #pointless.”

For the past two weeks, the weekday versions of the show have been replaced by Wimbledon but with the final of the annual sporting event concluding tomorrow, schedules will resume as of Monday.

Pointless Celebrities continues Saturday at 7.40pm on BBC One.
