Outlander season 5 spoilers: Brianna star Sophie Skelton reveals hidden clue to character | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Outlander’s Brianna Fraser (Played by Sophie Skelton) has undergone deep character development throughout the past five outings as fans have slowly seen the new mother open up.

Season three saw a very closed off Bree, who didn’t like sharing anything about her personal life, which drastically changed in season four with the maternal character becoming more and more open about her trauma and hardships.

However, the Brianna star feels the fan favourite is not always easy to understand.

Speaking to Parade, Sophie opened up about why she feels people may get her character wrong.

Sophie said: “I think Brianna’s one of those people, and Diana says, too, she’s very hard to understand and very misunderstood, she doesn’t let people in very easily, and now we’re at a point where she really does let people in.”

The star went on to say it became easier to play Brianna in the later seasons when she becomes more open as opposed to playing a character people know little about.

Brianna’s newfound openness means the actress now knows where her story is going and has a better understanding of who the mother is.

Furthermore, Brianna having to say goodbye to her mother Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) in season three when Claire had to travel back in time to find Jamie (Sam Heughan) marked a turning point for Sophie.

The event triggered a dramatic shift in Brianna’s character offering fans a look into what will come next.

In a promotional event sponsored by Starz, the actress went on to explain what challenges Brianna will face in the next outing.

The actress revealed Brianna will still be struggling with the trauma after inflicted by Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speelers) in season four, although at a different stage in dealing with the aftermath.

The star also revealed she may find it difficult to retain her identity as a modern woman whilst watching how she acts in public settings.

Could fans see Brianna’s modern ways run her into trouble in the next outing?

This comes after Sophie spoke out about the controversial storyline that saw the Frasers miss Brianna’s birth, revealing it reflects the different circumstances modern mothers may face.

Although fans were disappointed showrunners diverted from the book’s story where the Frasers were present, Sophie saw this as an important change.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Brianna actor Sophie spoke about the omission, and went on to theorise why she thinks the scene had changed.

She began: “It kind of resonates today with a lot of modern women. There are single moms, or maybe their parents aren’t around because they passed away.

“For someone of Bree’s age, I think it shows such strength of her character that she’s sort of surrounded by, not strangers, but people she doesn’t really know.

“She doesn’t really know Jocasta [Maria Doyle Kennedy] that well, and Lizzie is relatively new. Phaedra’s new. For Bree to do that alone is, I think, pretty great.”

Outlander season five will return to STARZ and Amazon Prime Video in 2020.
