EastEnders spoilers: Mel Owen to exit soap as Tamzin Outhwaite departs | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The EastEnders news comes as Mel’s (played Tamzin Outhwaite) best pal Lisa Fowler (Lucy Benjamin) is returning to the programme later in the year.

While fans may have been hoping to see the pair together in Walford once more, Tamzin will be leaving at the beginning of autumn, according to Metro.co.uk.

The publication has said Mel’s departure will be linked to the return of her son Hunter Owen (Charlie Winter) on the BBC soap.

Her only child was locked up earlier this year after killing his step-father, the bigamous Ray Kelly (Sean Mahon).

Executive Producer Jon Sen told Metro: “We are extremely grateful to Tamzin for reviving the character of Mel Owen back in 2017, allowing EastEnders fans the chance to see one of Walford’s most popular characters take centre stage once more.

“Tamzin is an incredible talent who has set our screens on fire with her wonderful performances in some of our most iconic storylines. We wish her the best of luck for the future.”

Meanwhile, actress Tamzin shared: ‘When John [Yorke] asked me to return to EastEnders back in 2017, I jumped at the chance to play Mel once more but it was only supposed to be for a year.

“That year quickly passed and I agreed to stay on for another, but now the time feels right to once again pursue other challenges.

“I will of course miss so many people here at EastEnders, and I will forever have good memories of my time at the show, but I am also excited to experience new roles outside of Walford.”

The exact details of the character’s exit are yet to be revealed but it’s unlikely Mel will go quietly.

News that Lisa would return to her old stomping ground was released earlier in the year.

The EastEnders official Twitter account shared in a post: “Lisa Fowler is coming back to Albert Square! With Louise expecting her first child, she'll want to be close by. How will Phil feel about that?!#EastEnders.”

It comes as Lisa’s daughter Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper) is pregnant with Keanu Taylor’s (Danny Walters) baby.

But little does Phil (Steve McFadden) know that his wife Sharon Mitchell (Letitia Dean) has had an affair with the young mechanic.

She’s pregnant too and Phil thinks it’s his, but Sharon doesn’t know who the father is.

Although, that may all change in episodes set to air next week.

Sharon will decide to plan a paternity test to find out once and for all.

She heads to a midwife appointment with Phil but awkwardly tries to cover that she’s already had bloods taken.

Later on back at home, she prepares to send the test off but is interrupted as Louise shares her troubles.

Will she ever find out the tot’s identity?

EastEnders continues tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.
