Lunatics vs Summer Heights High: Is Lunatics as good as Summer Heights High? | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Category: Entertainment,Gossip

The entire first season of Lunatics is available to stream and download on Netflix now. According to Netflix UK and Ireland's official Twitter account, Lunatics was the sixth most-watched show in April 2019. If you are a huge fan of Summer Heights High and are unsure whether to give Lunatics a go, here’s a round up of the reviews.

Is Lunatics as good as Summer Heights High from Chris Lilley?

No, unfortunately, Lunatics is not as good as Summer Heights High.

Where Summer Heights High shocked the viewer with its dark humour but still made you laugh out loud, Lunatics completely misses the mark.

Lunatics often leaves you feeling uncomfortable or bored whereas you could easily binge-watch Summer Heights High in one go.

Summer Heights High was set entirely in an Australian high school and saw Lilley take on now-iconic rolls such as Mr G, Ja’mie and Celine.

In Lunatics, Chris Lilley takes on various characters such as a real estate agent, a 12-year-old boy, South African lesbian pet psychic and a fashion store manager.

However, none of them stand out as relatable, funny or memorable.

Despite Summer Heights airing back in 2007, the show continues to remain popular with many videos and meme’s circling social media.

MEET THE LUNATICS CHARACTERS

What the viewers think

Many Chris Lilley fans have been left divided over his new series.

Lunatics was his first project in five years and Summer Heights High and Angry Boys fans were highly anticipating his return.

With Lunatics streaming on Netflix, it meant the series would be available to Lilley fans across the globe.

However, some viewed many of his characters as outdated and, at times, offensive.

Problems have particularly arisen around his portrayal of South African lesbian Jana Melhoopen-Jonks.

The show features around six different characters who are all equally as eccentric as each other.

On the other hand, fans have remained loyal to Lilley and praised his new comedy.

One fan on Twitter wrote: “Is anyone else watching #Lunatics on #Netflix because it is hysterical.”

Another tweeted: “#Lunatics on @netflix is pure gold @ChrisLilley you’re a comedic genius.”

On the other hand, one fan commented: “#Lunatics is rather disappointing.”

Another said: “Lunatics was a complete let down.”

The Ratings

Summer Heights High scores a rating of 8.4/10 on IMDb and a score of 67% on popular review site Metacritic.

Rotten Tomatoes also grants Summer Heights High a rating of 75%,

On the other hand, Lunatics has received a rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb.

The series also received a score of two out of five stars by Common Sense Media.

Unfortunately, Netflix does not release its viewing figures to the public.

What the critics say

Emma Grey Ellis from Dazed called Lunatics: “Dizzying, Tone-Deaf.”

She further explained: “It’s important that comics be able to poke fun at society’s ugliness, but Lilley’s continued lack of empathy looks far uglier than anything he’s satirising.

“Trying to live your best life despite your struggles isn’t lunacy. A comedian refusing to evolve his sense of humour is.“

Stuart Heritage from The Guardian wrote: “Lunatics is nasty and grotesque.”

He also added: “It's hard not to feel personally insulted.”

On the other hand, Michael Idato from The Sunday Morning Herald in Australia wrote: “Lunatics is funny. Mostly.”

Fans of Chris Lilley will have to give Lunatics a watch to find out if it is just as good as Summer Heights High.

Lunatics is streaming on Netflix now and Summer Heights High is available on the BBC iPlayer.
