Game of Thrones season eight welcomes Tyrion Lannister (played by Peter Dinklage) back for the HBO show’s final series. Plot leaks and spoilers surrounding Tyrion have been much sought after ever since news of the Game of Thrones season eight release date broke. One theory to gain plenty of attention among GOT fans, in particular, could see Tyrion betray the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

Will Tyrion Lannister betray Daenerys in Game of Thrones season 8?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Game of Thrones seasons 1-7.

Tyrion Lannister will begin Game of Thrones season eight in his position as Hand to the Queen.

Game of Thrones’ first look pictures from the season premiere confirm this as Tyrion’s pin can be clearly seen on his coat.

HBO viewers will also be introduced to Tyrion and Daenerys in Winterfell when season eight begins.

However, the pair may begin the season alongside one another, but several theories suggest Tyrion could betray Daenerys.

One factor to contribute towards these theories is Tyrion’s true feelings towards Daenerys.

Tyrion is widely believed to be in love with Daenerys.

Script leaks and plot details from the previous season have confirmed this, with plenty of references towards Tyrion acting jealous and upset because of his love for her.

Daenerys remains oblivious to these feelings, however, and simply sees Tyrion as her advisor.

There’s also the fact Daenerys struck up a romantic relationship with Jon Snow (Kit Harington) in the season seven finale.

The Lannister man was clearly devastated to witness Jon enter Daenerys’ room – and it wasn’t because the pair are actually aunt and nephew.

If these feelings of jealousy boil over, it’s reasonable to expect Tyrion could act out of rage.

Tyrion’s true feelings for the Mother of Dragons may not be enough for some fans to foresee Tyrion betraying Daenerys, but the part his brother Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) could play in season eight could be.

Jaime abandoned his sister-turned-lover Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) in the final episode of season seven.

Distraught at Cersei’s plans to betray Daenerys and Jon, Jaime left King’s Landing on horseback, presumably heading north.

In one of the many of the season eight promos, Game of Thrones fans even heard Jaime say: “I promised to fight for the living, I intend to keep that promise.”

Tyrion and Jaime’s relationship has remained strong despite the former killing their father Tywin (Charles Dance) and fleeing to pledge his allegiance to Daenerys.

Jaime was even the one to help Tyrion escape prison for killing King Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) in season four.

However, Jaime’s arrival north could throw a spanner in the works with the character unlikely to receive a warm welcome from Jon and Daenerys.

In season seven, Tyrion looked on horrified as Daenerys used her dragons and the Dothraki to dismantle and kills a Lannister army.

Jaime only managed to escape thanks to some quick-thinking from Bronn (Jerome Flynn).

Throughout the scene, Tyrion looked in despair at the sight of fallen Lannister men and even pleaded with Daenerys to take mercy on those who survived.

It was to no avail, however, as Daenerys ignored Tyrion, mercilessly killing Dickon (Tom Hopper) and Randyll Tarly (James Faulkner).

With Tyrion growing discontented by Daenerys’ violent ways and Daenerys disgruntled by Tyrion’s failures, how she wants to deal with Jaime could be the trigger for Tyrion’s betrayal.

One final factor that could contribute towards Tyrion’s betrayal could be Cersei’s pregnancy.

After the truce meeting in King’s Landing during the season seven finale, it was left to Tyrion to try and convince his sister to be on-board.

Tyrion headed to his sister’s chambers where the pair’s frosty relationship was put to one side to discuss the truce.

In the process, Cersei dropped the bombshell she was pregnant with Jaime’s baby by cradling her stomach.

While Tyrion still left his pregnant sister in King’s Landing and headed north, it’s been reiterated through the series he’s a proud Lannister family man and takes pride in the name.

Once Cersei’s gives birth – if she really is pregnant that is – her child will be the heir to the Iron Throne.

Knowing Daenerys would undoubtedly kill Cersei and her child, Tyrion may betray her to protect his unborn niece or nephew.

Fans will have to tune in to all six episodes of season eight to find out whether or not Tyrion will be the key to Daenerys’ downfall.

Game of Thrones season 8 premieres on Sunday, April 14 on HBO in the USA and on Monday, April 15 on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
