Game of Thrones season 8: Lena Heady reveals why she was against Euron scene | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Game of Thrones season eight’s premiere episode aired on Sunday night and one of the most talked about scenes took place between Cersei Lannister (played by Lena Heady) and Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk).

Euron and Cersei ended up in bed together, despite the character refusing his advances to begin with, but she eventually gave into him.

However, actress Lena Heady recently revealed that she wasn’t keen on the scene and took quite a lot of convincing to do it.

“I kept saying, ‘She wouldn’t, she wouldn’t, that she would keep fighting,’” Lena told Entertainment Weekly after the episode premiered on HBO.

“But [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] obviously know what they’re doing and were adamant Cersei would do what she had to do,” she finished.

Actor Pilou Asbæk then added that there were a lot of discussions before the scene was filmed.

“We had a lot of discussions,” he said.

“Would it be out of character for her to be with Greyjoy for power?

“We discussed it so much that we almost ended up going, ‘Maybe it’s too much.’

“Then we decided to try it out and see if it works.

“Sometimes you have to show different sides of a character.

“You have to surprise yourself as an actor, but you also have to surprise yourself as a character.”

Lena later revealed that she came round to the idea after she realised that it was in keeping with Cersei’s “ultimate survivor” nature, and her willingness to “[go] to the place where she doesn’t want to go".

Meanwhile, there are rumours that Euron Greyjoy could end up betraying Cersei Lannister.

The Golden Company seems to be Cersei's best chance to stay on the Iron Throne, yet with Euron basically commanding these soldiers, there’s no saying what could happen.

One potential outcome is Euron double-crossing Cersei and taking the Golden Company somewhere else to fight his own battles.

This potential outcome was hinted at by Euron himself when he spoke to Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan) whom he had tied up in the bowl of his ship.

"You picked the wrong side,” she warned the King of the Iron Islands.

Europe’s reply was somewhat ambiguous, yet it seemed to suggest that he’s been considering going against Cersei.

"Well, I'll sail the fleet somewhere else then,” he replied.

Game of Thrones continues Sunday on HBO in the USA and the following day on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
