College Basketball Tournaments: Florida State Tops Virginia Tech in Overtime

Terance Mann hit a wild off-balance runner with 1.8 seconds left in overtime to help 12th-ranked Florida State beat No. 16 Virginia Tech by 65-63 on Thursday in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament quarterfinals in Charlotte, N.C.

Mann’s shot from the right side rattled around the rim before dropping through the net to break a tie for the fourth-seeded Seminoles (26-6). The fifth-seeded Hokies (24-8) had a final chance, but Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who finished with 21 points, missed a desperation 3-pointer at the horn.

Devin Vassell scored 14 points to lead the Seminoles, including a contested 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. It was the second straight week that Florida State beat Virginia Tech in an extra period.

In other action in Charlotte, Kyle Guy scored 29 points, including seven 3-pointers, and No. 2 Virginia (29-2) beat North Carolina State, 76-56, after trailing by 2 at halftime. The Wolfpack (22-11) are one of the teams on the N.C.A.A. tournament bubble.

BIG EAST Eric Paschall had 20 points and 10 rebounds and No. 25 Villanova (23-9) took control in final nine minutes to beat Providence (18-15) in the quarterfinals at Madison Square Garden. The top-seeded Wildcats will next face Xavier (18-14), which advanced with a 63-61 win over Creighton (18-14) on a tip-in by Zach Hankins with 21 seconds left.

BIG TEN James Palmer scored 24 points and Nebraska, decimated by injuries and a suspension, shut down No. 22 Maryland for a 69-61 win in the second round in Chicago. The Cornhuskers (18-15), who harassed the Terrapins (22-10) into 36 percent shooting and 11 turnovers, will face Wisconsin in the quarterfinals. … Keyshawn Woods scored 18 to help Ohio State (19-13) bolster its N.C.A.A. hopes with a 79-75 win against Indiana (17-15).

BIG 12 Xavier Snead scored 19 points to lead No. 15 Kansas State (25-7) to an 70-61 win against Texas Christian (20-13), which led by 2 at the half, in the quarterfinals in Kansas City, Mo. … Iowa State (22-11) got five 3-pointers and 21 points from Talen Horton-Tucker in a 83-66 win against Baylor (19-13).

SEC Bryce Brown scored all 17 of his points in the second half to lead No. 22 Auburn (23-9) to an 81-71 against Missouri in the second round in Nashville. … Keyontae Johnson had 20 points and 12 rebounds to help the bubble team Florida (18-14) win, 66-50, against Arkansas (17-15).

AMERICAN Christian Vital scored 25 points and Jalen Adams added 19 points and 6 rebounds to lead Connecticut (16-16) to an 80-73 win against South Florida (19-13) in Memphis. The Huskies will face No. 11 Houston in the quarterfinals.

PAC-12 Jaylen Nowell scored 24 points, and top-seeded Washington (25-7) held on for a 78-75 victory against Southern California (16-17) in the quarterfinals in Las Vegas.

MOUNTAIN WEST Behind by 34-29 at halftime, No. 14 Nevada (29-3) shot 62 percent from the field in the second half in a 77-69 win against Boise State (13-20) in the quarterfinals in Las Vegas.

MID-AMERICAN Jeremy Harris scored 23 points for No. 18 Buffalo (29-3) in an 82-46 quarterfinal win over Akron (17-16) in Cleveland.
