The Walking dead season 9 spoilers: AMC boss says Whisperers will make show 'scary' again | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The Walking Dead is set to return to TV screens this weekend with another look at The Whisperers.

The brutal villains made their first official appearance in the final episode of season nine’s first half, after they killed Jesus (played by Tom Payne).

This event will surely send ripples through the show’s characters, and is expected to create a number of new plot lines in upcoming episodes.

The Whisperers are arriving as the next villains after Negan’s (Jeffery Dean Morgan) presence throughout seasons seven and eight.

But AMC showrunner Greg Nicotero has now spoken out about what sets the Whisperers apart from previous seasons’ villains.

Speaking to ComicBook.com he explained: “The show really hasn't been scary for a while.

“I mean, it just wasn't necessarily in the DNA.

"The last few seasons, there was a lot more drama of the war between Rick [Andrew Lincoln] and Negan – the Sanctuary and our good guys, so to speak.”

Greg went on to say he is “really excited” to introduce these new villains.

“I loved the opening of the cemetery scene,” he continued.

“I thought it was so scary, and just something really, really different and really exciting.”

The Whisperers’ arrival won’t be as scary as the show’s future without stand-out character Michonne (Danai Gurira).

It was revealed earlier this week Michonne will not stay in the show past season ten.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Michonne actor Danai will bow out of the show in the upcoming season ten.

Michonne will appear through a small number of episodes in the tenth season, before apparently taking part in the upcoming Rick Grimes spin-off movies.

AMC programming president David Madden recently spoke out about Michonne’s future in the show.

He expressed: “We really want her to stay. She is an incredibly valuable character, and I'm really hoping she stays.

“Obviously, the lesson of Andy is that the show can survive anybody's departure if need be, but that's not our goal.

“The goal is to have Danai continue on whatever basis she can make work, given the other things that she has going on in her life."

The Walking Dead season 9 continues Sunday in the US and Monday on FOX UK at 9pm in the UK.
