The actress revealed that she was told Ben Whishaw should have played the Time Lord just moments after being announced at the Doctor.

Speaking in David Tennant's new podcast David Tennant Does A Podcast With…, Jodie revealed a fan of the show told her she wanted Ben as the next Doctor.

She explained: “I was baseball-capped-up. Thinking I'm some kind of celeb, sunglasses inside and all that s**t!

“I went up to a cafe, and I went to order. This girl looked at me, she was about 17, so I was like, ‘I think this is my demographic’.

Jodie continued: “I could see her really psyching herself up. And she just went, ‘Are you…?’ and I just went, ‘Yeah…’

“And I said, ‘Can I talk to you to one side because I'm trying to be a bit sneaky and a bit hide-y?’ And she went, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah’.

“So I went and ordered, and I came back and went, ‘Are you a Whovian?’ And she went, ‘Yeah… I really wanted Ben Whishaw’.”

Jodie went on to add: “So I went, ‘You still might get him, the possibilities are endless, you could get anyone you wanted!’. I laughed my head off.”

The actress went on to discuss the pressure of taking on the hugely coveted role.

She continued: “I didn't realise the responsibility until after the first episode came out.

“Then when it came out, people and the fans, potentially from the figures we got new fans, I realised I could have set us back.

“If I'd have been c**p, which I have been in some jobs - there are jobs I've done where I've gone, ‘I smashed that’, and there are jobs I'm like, ‘Oh my god I was awful, I was miscast, I was terrible, I pitched it completely wrong’. Because that's the nature of the thing.

“But this job, had I pitched it wrong - I don't necessarily think I've got it right, but I know there's obviously not been such a huge backlash since it came out - but I didn't really realise until then that that I could've absolutely set us all bl**dy back here!

“But it didn't feel like a responsibility, it felt like something to be celebrated, and I'm really glad to be able to do that. I just think what this can't be is a moment, that will be irksome.”

It comes after fans were sent wild last month after the BBC made an unexpected announcement about the next series of the popular sci-fi show.

Doctor Who season 11 concluded Jodie’s first series last year, with a one-off special on New Year’s Day, rather than the annual Christmas broadcast.

The BBC revealed the show will not return for another series until 2020, but made a surprise announcement just a few weeks ago.

The show’s official Twitter account posted: “#DoctorWho is back in production!”

With the cast all wearing shorts, many fans noted the “tropical location”.

 returns to  One in 2020.
