Outlander season 4 spoilers: Stephen Bonnet star teases fans will 'HATE' character | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Category: Entertainment,Gossip

The premiere of Outlander’s fourth series left viewers reeling as the evil Stephen Bonnet revealed his true colours.

The episode had been a slow-burn at first, with Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) figuring out their lives in the New World after the loss of their friend Hayes.

The pair decided to build their own home in the rural colony of North Carolina with Young Ian (John Bell) and his new dog Rollo in tow, but everything was ripped away from them.

Ambushed on their river boat, Jamie and Claire were horrified when Irish pirate Stephen revealed he’d been following them ever since their unexpected meeting in the woods.

Stephen stole Claire’s wedding ring from Jamie, and killed one of their companions, before paddling away with a grin on his face.

But what will happen in episode two? The pirate also took the married couple’s gems and coins, leaving them completely destitute and devastated at the loss.

The teaser trailer revealed the cross-century couple will be heading to see Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy) on her plantation in Riverrun, so things could be looking up.

But Stephen will definitely return, and now Downton Abbey actor Ed has hinted at the horror that’s to come.

“I’ve been crying out to play a character like this for a very long time,” the star shared in an interview with Radio Times.

“I mean if [fans] end up hating him, then potentially I’m doing the right thing,” Ed continued, hinted at more despicable acts in the season.

“Stephen Bonnet is a multifaceted, layered character,” he went on. “A huge drawing card for me was just getting the opportunity to play someone like this because there’s a lot of depth to him and there’s a lot of conflicting emotional turmoil going on with him.

“He’s a charming man at the end of the day, he has a lot of drive and a lot of ambition, and he’s a pirate, he’s a smuggler.

“I feel he has strong views on the world, and I think strong opinions on where his place in the world is, I think in his mind he considers himself a gentleman.”

The star admitted he’s felt the pressure to do a good job following Tobias Menzies’ incredible portrayal of the evil Black Jack Randall on the series.

Black Jack tormented Claire and Jamie for two solid seasons on the series, and left Jamie in particular with the long-lasting trauma of abuse.

“There’s an enormous amount of pressure in some ways because of the job Tobias has done,” Ed considered. “It’s hugely commendable and getting to terms with the material on this show, of course I watched everything.

“But just watching that man and what he has brought to that character is unbelievable.

“He’s a world class actor. So that’s brought a lot of pressure.”

Outlander continues Sunday on STARZ in the US and follows Monday on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
