A weight loss diet that involves changing when you eat can help you lose double the weight.

Scientists revealed that changing meal times can help to reduce fat - even if meal times are only changed by half an hour.

The study suggested that dieters should eat breakfast an hour and a a half later and dinner an hour and a a half earlier.

Scientists at University of Surrey this could help dieters lose double the weight.

Subjects of the study were split into two groups.

One changed the times they ate while another group ate normally.

Participants were also able to eat freely, provided they stuck to the specific timings.

Findings showed that those who changed when they ate lost twice as much body fat.

Fifty-seven per cent of those who changed when they ate reported feeling reduced appetite and less snacking.

Dr Jonathan Johnston, Reader in Chronobiology and Integrative Physiology at the University of Surrey, said: "Although this study is small, it has provided us with invaluable insight into how slight alterations to our meal times can have benefits to our bodies.

“Reduction in body fat lessens our chances of developing obesity and related diseases, so is vital in improving our overall health.

"However, as we have seen with these participants, fasting diets are difficult to follow and may not always be compatible with family and social life.

“We therefore need to make sure they are flexible and conducive to real life, as the potential benefits of such diets are clear to see.”
