Starting on Channel 4 tonight is a brand new series called The Bisexual.

Episode one will air at 10pm on Wednesday, October 10.

The series follows a New Yorker who is feeling lost in London having decided to go on a ‘break’ from her 10-year relationship with girlfriend and business partner and is struggling to come to terms with her bisexuality.

Here’s a look at the cast.

Who is in the cast of The Bisexual on Channel 4?

Desiree Akhavan - Leila

Desiree Akhavan is the writer, director and star of The Bisexual.

Akhavan plays the lead character Leila who has identified as a lesbian for her whole life but then comes out as bisexual and starts seeing men for the first time in her 30s.

She has moved out of the flat she shared with her ex but still sees her every day at their joint tech company.

According to Channel 4, Leila begins sleeping with men but struggles to come out as bisexual to her gay friends, most importantly her best mate, the near un-shockable Deniz (played by Saskia Chana).

Speaking about the series Akhavan said: “It’s not autobiographical in its plot - I’ve never identified as a lesbian and came out as bisexual from the start, but the characters in it are inspired by the people Cecilia [Frugiuele, collaborator] and I know and love, so it comes from a very personal place.

“It’s a look at London and particularly Hackney as we know it.”

Akhavan is also known for creating Appropriate Behavior and The Miseducation of Cameron Post.

Maxine Peake - Sadie

Shameless actress Maxine Peake stars as Sadie in The Bisexual.

Sadie is Leila’s long-term girlfriend who is devastated by the break-up.

“There’s quite a bit of an age gap between Leila and Sadie, so I think that’s part of the complication,” Peake said.

Speaking about her character she explained: “Sadie hasn’t necessarily had the easiest life.

“She’s come from a working-class background, from the north, and Burnley’s a small town in the northwest of England. It was difficult for her. At school she had to hide it.

“And then she’s come to London, catapulted into a very high-flying middle-class world, where she’s trying to battle and fit in and keep her head above water. And I think she’s shut herself off quite a bit to survive, just got her head down and got on with it, and maybe lost a little bit of herself along the way.”

Peake has recently starred in Black Mirror and Silk.

Brian Gleeson - Gabe

Phantom Thread actor Brian Gleeson stars as Leila’s new housemate and unlikely wingman in The Bisexual.

“Gabe is a novelist who, when we meet him in the story, hasn’t had anything published for about 10 years,” Gleeson explained.

“He kind of became quite successful in his 20s, and it’s been a few years since that.

“He’s teaching in a college, and getting by, but he’s on the wane a little bit. He’s quite neurotic.”

Leila moves in with Gabe after she and Sadie beak up.

“The two of them get to know each other, and we follow her journey as she navigates the dating scene in London. That’s the basis of the show,” he said.

Gleeson himself is from Dublin and so is Gabe, but that wasn’t initially written into the script.

He explains: “There’s a lot of Irish in London, and have been for years – they’re very much a part of the city.

“But when you get to know Gabe’s background – that he left Ireland with his sister for a particular reason – I think him being Irish adds pathos to that.”

Gleeson also recently starred in Mother! with Jennifer Lawerence and his brother Domnhall Gleeson.

Other cast members include Saskia Chana as Deniz and Michelle Guillot as Francisca.
