fans last saw Betty Cooper (played by Lili) agree to be Jughead Jones’ (Cole Sprouse) Serpent Queen.

The pair will rule over the Southside together but after they have temporarily split in the past, could they parted again?

The possibility can’t be ruled out as actress Lili has stated she doesn’t want to play the high school star forever.

Could this season see her leave Riverdale and boyfriend Jughead behind?

Speaking about her future on The CW and Netflix series, the star told Teen Vogue: “I don’t want to play Betty Cooper my whole life.

“I’m ready to play different characters.”

Lili also spoke about her character’s alter ego, Dark Betty, laughing: “I think it kind of became a mockery of itself.

“It was supposed to be this dark side of her that she wasn’t able to express otherwise, and it just became this weird sexual thing that people didn’t really understand.”

Meanwhile, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa opened up about why Lili was the perfect person to play Betty.

“Even though Riverdale is a darker, subversive take on the Archie characters, [Lili’s] essence just screamed Betty Cooper,” he told the publication.

“She has a lot of contradictions, but the big thing is there’s nothing we can’t write for Lili that she cannot do.”

He added: “She’s sort of fearless.”

It comes after Lil said the new series is the “scariest yet”.

Speaking at New York Comic-Con, she teased: “It’s definitely the scariest season so far.

“It would say that it’s legit scary.

“It’s creepy and will give you nightmares.”

Her on-screen mum, Alice Cooper, played by Madchen Amick, added: “You’re going to have stuff that’s stuck in your head when you go to sleep at night.”

The third run will see the residents of Riverdale faced with a new villain, the Gargoyle King.

He has simply been described as someone “who’s sort of tormenting Riverdale, especially the kids”.

Viewers will have to tune into the new series to find out more.

Riverdale seasons 3 returns to CW on Wednesday 10 October and for UK viewers, Netflix on Thursday 11 October.
