X Factor found itself in the centre of some controversy last night when Simon Cowell met Giovanni Spano.

The 33-year-old West End performer appeared on stage dressed in tight black jeans, a vest top and a black denim sleeveless jacked.

He wore his long hair loose around his face as he explained rock music has always been his passion.

Giovanni explained: “My passion for rock music started at the age of eight.

“My mum came down the stairs one day and was like, ‘who the hell is singing?’”

He went on to perform an energetic rendition of Gimme Some Lovin’ by The Spencer Davis Group.

But the song didn’t seem to go down well with the audience, who failed to participate.

Simon, 58, brought the audition to an end and as Giovanni looked concerned.

He was given a lifeline by the judge who asked him to sing his second song.

The hopeful went on to perform the Goo Goo Dolls hit Iris, causing a better reaction with the audience.

It was good news for Giovanni who was then given three yeses meaning he got through to the next round.

But X Factor fans at home weren’t happy with the result, branding the fact he was given a second song a “fix”.

One said: “Can’t we just cut out the first song choice and skip to when Simon makes them sing the second? Getting a tad old now.”

Another added: “Nice to see it’s still a fix after all these years.”

A third wrote: “Simon stopping a song once again so he can smash it on his second song #fix.”

A fourth commented: “Producers do this every year bad first song then miracle worker simon gets them to do second song an they sail through.”

Elsewhere on X Factor, Simon Cowell announced he would be changing the format of the audition processes.

The music mogul revealed he would be removing the “Boot Camp” stage.

A show source told Digital Spy: “Every year producers look at refreshing the show and this was one of a number of changes brought in for this series.”

X Factor continues tonight on ITV at 8pm.
