His fee has not been disclosed.

Mr Oliver, 43, earned more than £10million from his previous 11-year deal with Sainsbury’s, which ended in 2011.

The deal comes as his restaurant chain is reportedly closing branches to curb costs.

Last week, he revealed he had put £13million of his own money into his Jamie’s Italian restaurant business to stop it going bust.

Last month, Mr Oliver said he was considering selling his Barbecoa steakhouses, and admitted he is in the process of shutting about a third of his Jamie’s Italian outlets as part of a rescue plan with creditors that would enable the firm to continue trading.

The Tesco deal comes after a hectic few days for Mr Oliver.

Last week, the celebrity chef tackled an intruder at his family home in north London.

He was hailed a hero after reportedly chasing the would-be thief and pinning him to the ground until police arrived.

The “aggressive” man who tried to break in will not face any police action, officers said yesterday.

It is believed Mr Oliver’s wife Jools, 43, and their five children, Poppy, Daisy, Petal, Buddy and River were all in the house at the time.

Yesterday, Mr Oliver called the incident “frightening” but batted off claims he was a hero as he had no choice but to confront the man.

He said that he had a “tiny window” to stop the incident “getting much, much worse”.

He added: “I didn’t have a choice so it wasn’t really about bravery.

“It was a very odd, and frightening scenario.”
