Home Secretary Julia Montague was blown up at the end of episode three of the six-part series.

Fans have speculated that despite appearances, she is still alive and in hiding.

However, both Hawes and writer Jed Mercurio have insisted the fictional politician is dead.

Mercurio said: “I like to try to do things that move the story on and with Bodyguard I wanted to have this event mid-series that would completely alter the dynamic.”

This has not stopped some fans claiming that because her demise was not shown there is still potential for Montague to return.

The show, also starring Richard Madden as close protection officer David Budd, has proven to be the number one drama of 2018 so far.

Episode one attracted audiences of 10.4 million to savour the political intrigue and some of the steamiest scenes on British television.

In tonight’s programme Budd becomes more deeply involved in finding the apparent murderer.

As he delves into his former lover’s political manoeuvring, his theories about a conspiracy at the heart of government seem highly plausible.

Meanwhile heart-throb Madden revealed he is thrilled to be allowed to keep his Scottish accent.

He said: “It helps me because it means I don’t have to think about doing an accent. And I also think having a Scots accent makes it easier to emote things,” said the 32-year-old from Renfrewshire.

Mercurio has hinted Madden could also appear in his hit series Line Of Duty: “We have worked together before and I had a brilliant time collaborating with him so if we could ever work together in the future that would be brilliant.”

● Bodyguard, BBC One, today, 9pm.
