Helen Skelton, who now fronts the likes of Countryfile and the BBC’s sports coverage, admitted she said no to a presenting slot on Blue Peter.

The 35-year-old said she was “having the best time” on Newsround and Sportround that it didn’t appeal at first.

Eventually, the presenter accepted the job back in 2007 and became the programme’s 33rd star.

“At first I said no,” the mother-of-two commented: “I was having the best time of my life, but then someone pointed out that for a television presenter there is no better job.”

During a new interview with the Yorkshire Post, Helen continued: “It had the biggest studio in TV Centre and was such a massive brand but you didn’t really have time to think about it.”

The small screen favourite was a regular fixture on Blue Peter up until 2013, and said none of the presenters “have time to come up for air”.

She continued: “You go from country to country, you don’t have time to sit down and think, ‘What’s my public perception?’”

Addressing her decision to bid farewell to the offering, she went on: “I did have the most amazing time on Blue Peter. It broke my heart when I left.

“But you have to leave while you still love it and I had a crazy six years going from one place to the next with very little time to think about what I was doing.”

The famous face started her career at Radio Cumbria, where she quickly won the breakfast show in early 20s.

Saying it nearly killed her, she left after a year and moved to London, where she landed her Newsround gig.

Since her time on Blue Peter, Helen has been involved in the Strictly Come Dancing: Christmas Special, London Marathon Highlights, the BBC Sport Olympic Coverage and Lorraine.

Meanwhile, this morning she took to her Twitter page to promote her latest project in view of her 118,000 followers.

She tweeted: “Rare appearance on the file this eve. Got myself new wheels for the harvest special @BBCCountryfile #outdoors #rurallife #harvest.”

Facing away from the camera, she was seen behind the wheel of what appeared to be a red tractor.

Wearing her blonde tresses up, she sported a right and white striped top emblazoned with “Starstruck” and denim trousers.

She was soon inundated with replies, with one user writing: “So looking forward to that, love big machines.”

Two others continued: “Looks quite posh for a combine harvester,” and: “Is there no end to your talents Helen?”

Helen is set to investigate how the extreme weather has brought about a carrot crisis by visiting a farm in York.

Countryfile continues tonight at 7pm on BBC One.
