Following the titles, Emma continued: “As you may have heard today, this will be the last ever series of Big Brother on Channel 5.

“Our mission is to make it the biggest and best series yet, especially for you watching at home, and you who join us live because you're the ones who've kept us going for 18 years.”

Emma was booed by the crowd as she delivered the news that it was coming to an end.

However, she went on to tease them with details of the new housemates as she revealed a huge secret about the selection process.

The 42-year-old revealed: “Since January we have been on an epic search to find you the most entertaining, tenacious, and single-minded characters in the whole of the land.

“20,000 applied, 50,000 minutes of application videos were viewed before 1,500 were invited to audition across the country.”

She then revealed that hopefuls had to go through interviews, tasks and diary rooms to be whittled down.

“Tonight, 20,000 became 14,” she concluded.

Emma’s comments on the final series came as .

When first housemates Cian arrived at the Borehamwood Bungalow, he walked through the crowd and straight into the house without speaking to Emma.

Viewers were quick to notice that the host watched his entrance from the sidelines and took to Twitter to comment.

“He didn't have any interaction with Emma, this is so old school I love it #BBUK #SaveBBUK,” one wrote.

Another continued: “Interesting! They’re allowing housemates to walk through the crowd this time, and they’re not stopping to talk to Emma. Finally, better pace! #BBUK.”

A third shared: “Yes yes yes cutting out the sh**t talk! #BBUK.”

“So Emma doesn't speak to them then? #bbuk,” someone else asked.

Big Brother will air over eight weeks before the final winner receives a £100,000 prize.

Big Brother airs nightly on Channel 5 at 10pm.
