WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for The Handmaid's Tale season two.

The unbelievably cruel treatment of women pervades The Handmaid’s Tale and there have been some very brutal scenes in the latest series.

But Commander Fred Waterford actor Joseph drew the line at attacking his on-screen wife Serena Joy (played by Yvonne Strahvoski).

Initially the script dictated that Fred would rape Serena during their visit to Canada in episode nine, but Joseph “refused” to film the scene.

Now, Serena actress Yvonne has spoken out about what she thought of the abandoned plot point.

She explained how she believed it would be “too much” to include in the series.

“Joe and I talk a lot about our dynamic as the Commander and Serena. There’s a lot of thought that gets put into everything,” she said to Entertainment Weekly.

“I know he felt strongly to not do that. We didn’t want to also take away from the rape that would then happen with Offred.

“It seemed like it was going to be a bit too much if he had forced Serena to have sex with him in the hotel in Canada.”

Joseph had previously told the publication: “I guess in many ways, as abhorrent and nasty and evil as Fred is, I have to defend parts of him.

“In episode nine, we had a moment where Fred was going to rape — after meeting Luke — rape Serena in a hotel room straight after, and it just didn’t track for me.

“I had to go out on a limb and refuse to do it because I felt that even though Fred is who he is, he’s human.

“And I think that he would be reeling from the interaction with Luke, and that suddenly the reality comes face to face with him and he would be digesting that and trying to understand it.

“And he wouldn’t necessarily be switched on by being in Canada in a new hotel and trying to heavily persuade his wife to do something that she wouldn’t want to do.”

Season two also featured a big character development for Serena.

In the end she gave Offred (Elisabeth Moss) back her daughter as she knew the infant would have a better life in Canada.

Although, what she doesn’t yet know is that Offred stayed back in Gilead because of her other daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake).

Viewers will have to wait until season three to see what happens to her.
