Outlander season 4 news: Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe suffer HUGE blow in show twist | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The historic epic has gradually built up a dedicated following over the years and yet the hugely-talented cast have been consistently snubbed at the Emmy awards ceremony every year.

This year’s nominations were no different, and the Jamie and Claire Fraser stars were left out in the cold as the full list of nominations rolled through yesterday.

Season three of Outlander saw heartbreaking performances from the estranged on-screen couple, and it has been the star-crossed pair’s most difficult time yet.

The first five episodes of the time-travelling romance spanned 20 years, meaning the characters struggled through the harrowing reality of being apart.

But despite dealing with such a difficult acting feat - the actors were merely given ageing makeup to give a realistic portrayal of the passing of time - their efforts were ignored at the most prestigious American television awards ceremony.

Instead, HBO’s mammoth fantasy hit Game of Thrones received a slew of Emmy nods.

Netflix favourite The Crown picked up the slack, which could mean the two shows are set to go head-to-head when the ceremony airs in September.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Outlander however, as the show’s impressive costume department received one nomination.

Headed by Terry Dresbach, the nod was for Best Period Costumes for episode five, which is titled Freedom and Whisky.

The episode saw the introduction of Claire’s iconic “bat-suit”, which was an outfit designed by the 20th Century surgeon to get her safely back to the 1700s.

The instalment also featured an array of 1960s attire.

With the bittersweet news, fans shared their conflicting feelings on social media.

One person posted: “A tear or two may have fallen but it is not over yet... @OutlanderCostume YOU'VE GOT THIS #TOTHECAR.”

“I just keep wondering when will they notice Sam. He's been amazing since season one and with season three… I had tears flowing. Cait, Sam and the show deserves an Emmy. No matter what, I will continue to watch #outlander… best show on TV!” Another viewer shared.

A third wrote: “Very happy for costume design, but seriously disappointed in lack of other #Emmy nominations for #outlander. Another night I won’t be watching.”

While a fourth wondered: “Well deserved, but what about other category nominations - Best Actor, Actress and Series! @SamHeughan deserves to win, let alone be nominated!

“Same people get nominated every year. Starting to wonder if Emmys are legit. #Outlander #BestSeriesEver.”

One angry fan declared: “How could @SamHeughan and @caitrionambalfe not be nominated for a #emmy! Honestly wtf. @Outlander_STARZ the show is worth more than one nomination! #Outlander #outlanderemmy.”

“Am I the only one who feels certain shows were overlooked by the #emmys? Like #Outlander #PeakyBlinders just to name a couple,” another confused person added.

Outlander season 4 returns to STARZ and Amazon Prime Video in November.
