Peaky Blinders fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of the iconic 1920s Birmingham drama, with many wondering how many more shocks the BBC drama can deliver.

Season four of the period drama saw John Shelby (played by Joe Cole) killed in a horrific gunshot scene.

Viewers then suffered in the high-stakes finale following what appeared to be Arthur Shelby’s (Paul Anderson) death during a major boxing match.

Luckily, the entire plot was revealed to be a ruse and a way for Tommy (Cillian Murphy) and the rest of the Shelbys to destroy the Changretta family.

Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody) finally got his comeuppance, but what’s next for the lead characters?

A brand new still shows a first look at Tommy when season five picks back up.

Perched atop a beautiful black horse, the businessman looks concerned over something as he stares off into the distance.

Clad in his usual 1920s-30s attire, the Shelby leader is clearly back and ready for action, but is he in danger from a new gangster family in Birmingham?

Or will he be heading off to London for some more drama?

Series five of creator Steven Knight’s hugely-popular drama sees brand new turmoil in the form of the 1929 financial crash.

With Tommy now an MP, he is approached by an important politician with a view for changing everything in Britain.

Tommy is then faced with a huge decision when he realises his actions could change everything for the future of his family and the country.

Executive producer Caryn Mandabach has teased: “Steve’s Birmingham saga becomes more fascinating and more relevant with every chapter.

“This one promises to be the best yet. I’m truly grateful to the BBC for their support of such thrilling, immersive and resonant storytelling.”

“The story of the Peaky Blinders and of the Shelby family gets woven into the political fabric of Britain,” Steven continued. “As well as Europe - as the 1920s end and the thirties begin.

“Tommy Shelby faces the darkest force he has ever faced and his struggle is as relevant today as it was then.”

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama has also added: "Peaky Blinders is a truly iconic BBC drama.

“I cannot wait for viewers to see what Steven has in store when the cast, led by the mesmerising Cillian Murphy, return for series five in its new home on BBC One.”

Peaky Blinders season 5 returns to BBC One in 2019.
