The Walking Dead season 9 spoilers: Negan's role in Rick Grimes exit revealed? | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Earlier this year it was revealed Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) would be leaving after nine seasons on the show.

It has not yet been revealed how the leader of the Alexandrians will depart but now new showrunner Angela Kang has hinted Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) will play a large part.

Negan was locked up a jail cell at the end of season seven and when the new series airs, he will have been held as a prisoner for 18 months.

And it seems his time in solitude has given him a chance to think as he could be planning on turning the communities against Rick, leading to his exit.

Teasing how he could get inside the heads of those closest to Rick, Angela explained: “Of course Negan is still Negan.

“He can’t help but say things that are snarky or kind of rough, but we’re gonna see some really different emotional shades to him.”

She went on to add to IGN there will be a change in the nature of the interactions he has with those around him.

“There was so much during the war that was mano a mano with Rick and Negan, and this year we’re gonna see some other people have some really significant interactions with him that I hope are a little different and surprising,” Angela said.

Furthermore, in a newly-released teaser, Negan can be seen hinting to Rick he won’t be around for long.

“You’re not saving the world,” he snarls at Rick. “You’re just getting it ready for me.”

Negan star Jeffrey has also revealed he will be interacting with other characters, further fuelling the theory he could be at the front of a mutiny against Rick.

“I’m getting to work with some people that I haven’t worked with yet on the show, which has been really exciting,” he said at San Diego Comic Con.

He continued: “This year, it’s kind of, I’m slowly being integrated into scenes with people I haven’t seen since I had them kneeling in front of me, which has been really interesting and fun.”

Meanwhile, actor Andrew has opened up on his exit saying it was time for him to leave.

Also speaking at Sani Diego, he explained: “I love this show. It means everything to me.

“I love the people who make this show.

“I’m particularly fond of the people who watch this show. I’m really, really excited about this season.

“No one is bigger than the story, and the story this year is unbelievable.”

He added that he was leaving the show in order to focus on his family.

The Walking Dead season 9 airs October 7 on AMC.
