Maniac on Netflix ending explained: What happened at the end? | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Maniac

Although Maniac was only released last night, some Netflix subscribers have already binged their way through all 10 episodes of the trippy comedy-drama starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill.

Those who have watched the whole of Maniac will have come to the confusing final episode.

Here’s our explanation for that final episode and what it means for a potential season two of Netflix’s Maniac.

What happened at the end of Maniac?

The synopsis for the episode, titled Option C, reads: “After the subjects are discharged, Dr James Mantleray (played by Justin Theroux) and Dr Azumi Fujita (Sonoya Mizuno) face Neberdine's CEO.

“Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill) and Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) part ways -- until a startling headline sparks a reunion.”

In the episode, the clinical trial is declared a success, though it is unsure how much this is actually the case.

At least Owen has learned a lesson about how to avoid damaging behaviours - he separates himself from Annie to prevent him falling for what he thinks is another delusion.

WILL THERE BE ANOTHER SERIES OF MANIAC?

However, this does not lead to his life improving.

In the first episode, he was due to testify against his brother (Billy Magnussen), but then did not after he threatened to get him locked into an asylum.

Following the trial, he does decide to do what’s right and testify and as promised this lands him a place in a psychiatric hospital.

Luckily, Annie comes to help get him out of the institution.

MANIAC REVIEW

She manages to persuade him that what they went through together in the clinical trial really happened and they get out of the asylum.

Their story ends with them driving away, finally heading to Salt Lake City.

Meanwhile, the series is ambiguous about whether the trial has really worked.

Mantelray says the patients are completely cured but then we see him shouted by his boss in the talking TV for his numerous failures, putting that statement into question.

HOW TO WATCH MANIAC ONLINE

He too ends in a car, driving with Fujita to what the talking TV calls “a personal project” which, if the “limited series” gets another season we might find more about.

However, then the series ends with an image that puts all of that into doubt.

The two cars drive off, and a chihuahua and a hawk are seen, animals that have represented Owen and Annie in the series.

Could this mean that what we’re watching is itself happening in one of the therapy sessions, or that the trial has had no effect on Owen being able to separate fantasy and reality?

Maniac is available to stream in Netflix now
