Enzo Cilenti, 44, is set to make his debut Luther in the upcoming series, season five.

However, the actor has now explained he almost missed out on the role - as the star revealed he already portrayed a different character in the BBC show.

Letting slip the surprising secret, the star exclusively told Express.co.uk: “My wife, Sienna [Guillory, who played Mary Day] was in it in series three.”

Enzo recalled how during the 43-year-old’s time working for the programme, the director had rung him to see if he wanted to play the role of, ironically, her on-screen ex-husband.

Having accepted the day of filming on location, the father-of-two remembered: “We went and shot that on Brick Lane [in London], and mercifully, it ended up on the cutting room floor. They didn’t use it [in the final edit].

“Had they used it, I wouldn’t have been able to play a different character in season five - which is one of the most extraordinary characters I have ever played, probably in my career.”

Offering some likely reasons why the scene was cut, he explained directors usually have more material than available airtime, as well as considering how some scenes could affect the future storylines.

Elsewhere during the interview, Enzo opened up about why he never met some of the major cast members of Game of Thrones - despite having starred in the fantasy drama back in season five.

When quizzed about what it was like behind-the-scenes, the star told Express.co.uk: “Pretty much, who you see me on screen with, is who I met.

“So I didn’t meet Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington) which is usually the second question that gets asked in regards to Game of Thrones! I never met Kit.”

The actor, who has starred in The Theory of Everything and Guardians of the Galaxy, went on to explain exactly why some cast members would never encounter one another on set.

“You’ve got two crews working at any one time - you’ve got the crew in Belfast, and you’ve got the crew working on location.

“In my case, that was Croatia, and then Spain. So you just stay within your ‘world’, your ‘family’ - which is actually really common [in the industry].”

Enzo is currently cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats on a tandem with his father Pietro, in aid of Parkinson’s UK.

The father-of-two opened up about how he had surprised his father with the challenge by writing it in a birthday card, before explaining what the fund-raising effort meant to his dad, who suffers from Parkinson’s UK.

Discussing the huge cycling task ahead of them, Enzo - who hails from West Yorkshire - said: “Exercise is a fundamentally important part of dealing with Parkinson’s - it really, really, really helps alleviate a lot of the symptoms,” so it seems like a very logical thing to do.

“Only the other day, when we were doing a tandem training ride together, my dad said, ‘I feel a bit like my old self’.”

He added: “To hear him say those words was incredible moving."

The Deloitte Ride Across Britain takes place from the September 8-16. For details of how to register for the 2019 event and take part in other cycling fundraisers for Parkinson’s UK visit: www.parkinsons.org.uk/cycling.
