WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Sacred Games season 1

Netflix’s epic Indian gangster series Sacred Games has not officially been given a second series by the streaming service.

However, the show has had rave reviews and only covers a quarter of the 1,000 page book by Vikram Chandra it is based on.

This has led to speculation that the series is due to return, fuelled by actor Saif Ali Khan (who plays police detective Sartaj Singh) saying: “Yes, we should be out with one season every year.”

Is Gaitonde really dead in Sacred Games?

Along with questions over a renewal, fans have been speculating whether Ganesh Gaitonde (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is really dead and if he will be back in season two.

In episode one of the show, Gaitonde is telling his life story when police barge in to his hideout, causing the gangster to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head.

The series then plays out in flashback with Gaitonde seeming to narrate the events from beyond the grave.

Although this seems like a definite death for the character, what he says to Sartaj before he dies seems to confuse things.

HOW TO WATCH SACRED GAMES ONLINE

In an exchange between the police officer and Gaitonde, the latter describes himself as the “ashwatthama” or immortal.

He says to Sartaj: “I told you, I am Ashwatthama. I am not going anywhere until this game is over."

Ashwatthama is a character from Hindu religious text the Mahabharata cursed with immortality for 3,000 years.

Could this mean that the gangster is due to return back to life in the second season?

HOW MANY EPISODES WILL BE IN SACRED GAMES?

Some have taken the fact that he continues to narrate the series as proof that the character did not really die.

However, one fan of the show has explained how he could narrate the series and still be dead.

They wrote: “This is a literary technique called Posthumous Narration. The narrator is dead and continues talking to the readers/viewers.

“Once Gaitonde is dead he's not talking to Sartaj anymore, he's talking to himself and the audience.”

The most famous modern example of posthumous narration is in the 1999 film American Beauty, in which Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) narrated the film despite dying at the end of the Oscar-winning movie.

WHERE IS SACRED GAMES SET?

In fact, he actually says: “In less than a year, I'll be dead...of course I don’t know that” at the beginning of the film.

Other famous examples of the trope can be found in the 2005 film Sin City and the 1945 Sunset Boulevard.

The confusion over whether this is posthumous narration or a sign that Gaitonde did not really die can perhaps be explained by the fact that, according to one Reddit user: “This is the first time this technique is used in popular Indian movie/TV series AFAIK [as far as I know].”

Fans of the show will be able to find out for themselves whether the character dies if the show gets a second season from Netflix.
