How They Got Here in 2018

England went 2-1 in the group stage, narrowly beating Tunisia, 2-1; and routing Panama, 6-1; before falling to Belgium, 1-0, in the final group game.

In the knockout round, England beat Colombia, in a hard-fought nail-biter, 4-3 on penalties.

In the quarterfinal, England sailed past Sweden, 2-0, to advance to the semifinals.

What’s at Stake

England has some of the most passionate fans in the world, some of whom are making last-second plans to get to Russia in time for the final two rounds. For the country that lays (disputed) claim to inventing the game, this World Cup is a chance to turn around a history of letdowns and near misses.

Star striker Harry Kane will look to continue his standout performance. He’s on pace to win the golden boot as the World Cup’s leading scorer.
